Day after day, I wasn’t able to do anything because of the pandemic, and I needed some kind of action to find meaning in the day. So I did coding every day and left a record in the sense of turning those transformed day-to-day thoughts back to their rightful place and shaking off the sense of anxiety. It was the beginning of Every day is a Code project. I would read the image-producing algorithms in surrounding landscapes and objects or imagine new forms and rules in a mathematical sense, and then try to bring them to the screen through coding. You could see my coding not so much as a matter of achieving an image as a way of pondering the actions that create images and recording that process. Transforming in regular ways before eventually returning to their original shape, the cyclical group forms create images as they alter their properties and rearrange themselves according to the values called up by the Perlin noise. Due to the nature of human visual perception and the way we group together things that are similar or identical and close to us, the individual shapes come across as a single large movement. Rendered on a two-dimensional surface, the lines create the illusion of three-dimensionality through their interrelationship.

Artist/ Collective Bio:

Seo currently works as a full-time faculty member at the Samsung Art and Design Institute (SADI). Her major works include Snow White on the Table (2006), The Shape of Water (2011), Museum of Memory Told by Object (2012–2014). She has also presented the results of her Creative Computation class at A Balancing Act (2018) and One-way ticket to Mars (2019) in conjunction with Kunsthal KAdE in the Netherlands. She has participated in events such as the Asia Triennial Manchester, the KOBE Biennale, the Ogaki Biennale, the Seoul Mediacity Biennale, the Gwangju Design Biennale, and an exhibition commemorating 50 years of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Argentina. She has also collaborated with Nike, Shu Uemura, Shiseido, Guerlain, and Vogue.
